Thanksgiving Cookies

As the crisp autumn air settles in, I find myself reminiscing about childhood joys—transforming Golden Oreos into whimsical Thanksgiving Cookies. Each tiny cornucopia, filled with colorful mini M&M’s, makes baking a comforting sanctuary in the kitchen at spiilled.

Twisting apart the Golden Oreos skillfully is crucial. It creates the perfect base, ensuring your edible masterpieces hold together beautifully.

Embracing the Whimsy of Thanksgiving Cookies

  • Golden Oreos: These sweet, buttery cookies form the base of our Thanksgiving delight. Their creamy frosting holds everything together, creating a perfect foundation for our tiny cornucopias.
  • Bugles: Shaped like mini cornucopias, Bugles add a delightful crunch and playful twist. They’re the key to transforming these cookies into festive holiday treats.
  • Mini M&M’s Baking Bits: Bursting with color and flavor, these tiny candies fill our cornucopia and bring a cheerful, vibrant look to each cookie. Their size makes them perfect for nestling around the Bugles.
  • Key Technique: Twisting the Oreos: Gently twist apart the Golden Oreos to reveal the frosting side without causing breaks or crumbles. This technique ensures a sturdy base, allowing your Bugles to stay firmly in place.
  • Garnish with More Mini M&M’s: Feel free to go wild with extra mini M&M’s, adding a generous sprinkle around the cookie for added flair and fun.

Isn’t it beautiful how these few ingredients combine to create something so joyful? Each element plays its part in a simple yet delightful mix of textures and tastes.

Crafting Your Thanksgiving Cookies

With just 10 minutes of total time, let’s dive into creating a playful treat that captures childhood wonder and holiday cheer.

  1. Separate Golden Oreos: Twist the Golden Oreos gently to separate them. The goal here is to leave the frosting side intact. Listen for that subtle snap as the halves come apart. Set aside or snack on the non-frosted pieces.
  2. Prep the Cookie Base: Examine your frosted halves. If any frosting is uneven or thin, carefully use a little extra frosting from another Oreo. Aim for a thick, sticky surface to hold your decorations snugly.
  3. Position the Bugles: Press a Bugle into the center of the frosting. Make sure it resembles a tiny cornucopia, nestled cozily in place. It should feel firm under your fingertips. If it’s loose, add a bit more frosting for security.
  4. Add Mini M&M’s: Arrange the mini M&M’s around the Bugle, placing them strategically to resemble an overflowing cornucopia. Listen as they settle into the frosting with a satisfying crunch. If you need extra hold, dab a little frosting from those non-perfect Oreo halves.
  5. Secure with Extra Frosting (Optional): If transporting these cookies, you might want to ensure every M&M stays put. Use a small dollop of tub frosting as adhesive. Picture each candy as a burst of festive color, perfectly positioned.
  6. Final Touch: Inspect each cookie. Are they colorful and inviting? Adjust as needed before enjoying your first bite.

These charming Thanksgiving Cookies are not only fun to make but also to share. Whip them up for a visual and sensory holiday treat that will charm guests of all ages.

Creative Twists for Your Thanksgiving Cookies

Sometimes the simplest recipes are the most fun to experiment with. Here’s how you can play with your Thanksgiving Cookies using the same beloved ingredients, giving each cookie its own unique flair.

  • Twist and Save Tip: When twisting the Oreos apart, keep the plain sides for later snacking or crumbling over ice cream. This way, nothing goes to waste and you have an extra treat to enjoy!
  • Precision Press Tip: For perfectly placed Bugles, gently press the Bugle into the frosting with a slight twist. This ensures it’s securely attached and won’t topple over when the cookies are moved or served.
  • Pattern Play Tip: Arrange the mini M&M’s in fun patterns like hearts or zigzags. This not only makes each cookie visually enticing but also lets you personalize the cookies for your guests.
  • Extra Hold Tip: If a Bugle doesn’t stick well or an M&M seems loose, use a dab of frosting from another Oreo. Keeping a little extra frosting on standby can save your creations from mishaps, ensuring every cookie is picture-perfect.

These small techniques can transform your Thanksgiving Cookies into a fun and memorable holiday treat, perfect for sharing with loved ones.

Keeping the Whimsy Fresh

Once you’ve crafted your charming Thanksgiving Cookies, you’ll want to keep them as delightful as the moment they were made. Store any extras in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days. It’s key to let these treats cool completely before sealing them away to ensure they maintain their delightful crunch. While freezing these little treasures isn’t the best option due to the textures involved, they’re such a quick assembly that fresh is always best!

If you do find your cookies need a little refreshment, there’s a simple trick. Place them on a plate and let them sit at room temperature for a few minutes to bring back their inviting crunch. You can even pop them in a barely warm oven for a minute or two if needed. Just be careful not to linger too long, as you want the frosting intact and the colors vibrant. Enjoy your bite-sized taste of Thanksgiving magic!

Perfect Pairings for Thanksgiving Cookies

Cozy Sips & Snacks:

  • Warm Apple Cider: The comforting warmth and hint of spice in a mug of cider perfectly contrast the sweet, crunchy cookies, creating a cozy, autumnal duo.
  • Hot Chocolate: Rich and creamy hot chocolate with melted marshmallows offers a luxurious partner to the playful textures of the cookies, making every bite feel indulgent.

Festive Finishing Touches:

  • A Dusting of Powdered Sugar: A light sprinkle of powdered sugar adds a snowy touch, enhancing the visual charm and the sweetness balance.
  • Edible Glitter: Sparkling edible glitter brings a magical element, ensuring your cookies catch the light and the eyes of every guest.

Thanksgiving Cookies are all about joy, nostalgia, and a touch of whimsy. When you serve them with these cozy and festive accompaniments, you create an inviting moment that everyone will savor. What cozy drink or garnish will you pair with your Thanksgiving Cookies this holiday season?

Ingredients

Ingredients
  • ▢ 1 package (14 ounces) Golden Oreos
  • ▢ 1 bag Bugles
  • ▢ 1 bag (10 ounces) mini M&M’s baking bits candies

Method

  1. The ingredients don’t have specific amounts, as you’ll need to buy all those things anyway, and it depends on how many of the cookies come apart perfectly and how many Bugles look like cornucopias—you will likely have some leftover of both.
  2. Separate the golden Oreo sandwich cookies and eat or save the side of the cookie with no frosting. I found the best way to separate the Oreos is by twisting the top off from the bottom.
  3. On the side with the frosting, press a cornucopia-looking Bugle onto the cookie.
  4. Press the mini M&M’s strategically in and around the bugle. Use extra frosting from cookies that didn't separate well if needed to get the M&M’s firmly placed on the cookies.
  5. Alternatively, you can also use a tub of frosting if needed to pipe small amounts of frosting onto the M&M to get it very secure (I never found this necessary, but I also didn’t transport these to any gathering.)

Notes

The technique of twisting apart the Golden Oreos is crucial, as it allows you to separate the cookie halves without crumbling them. This ensures a sturdy base for your cornucopia Bugles, maintaining the structural integrity of your Thanksgiving Cookies and allowing for the perfect presentation.
