Hey there, fellow plant and yarn lovers! Let’s talk about bringing a little more boho charm into our homes. If you love the look of macrame but your heart truly belongs to crochet, this is the pattern for you! I designed these beautiful crochet plant hangers to mimic the stunning, openwork knotting of macrame, but worked up entirely with your crochet hook. They look intricate and impressive, but trust me, they are surprisingly simple to whip up. You can easily make the smallest size in a single evening!
Whether you have tiny succulents or large trailing pothos, I’ve got you covered. This pattern includes three different sizes (small, medium, and large) so you can accommodate pots from 3 inches all the way up to 6.5 inches. Grab some durable cotton yarn and your favorite hooks, and let’s get making!
Finished Size
Small: Basket measures ~2.5 inches (6.35 cm) high. Fits a 3″ – 3.5″ (7.6 – 8.9 cm) pot. Base diameter is 3.125 inches (7.9 cm).
Medium: Basket measures ~3.75 inches (9.5 cm) high. Fits a 3.5″ – 4″ (8.9 – 10 cm) pot. Base diameter is 3.75 inches (9.5 cm).
Large: Basket measures ~5.75 inches (14.6 cm) high. Fits a 6″ – 6.5″ (15.2 – 16.5 cm) pot. Base diameter is 6 inches (15.2 cm).
Gauge
Gauge is determined by the diameter of your basket base rounds as listed above for each size.
Construction Overview
This hanger is built in three easy sections: the circular basket base worked in a continuous spiral, the openwork diamond-stitched basket sides, and the hanger strap. After crocheting your basket, you’ll craft a hanging ring (I’ve provided three options for you), add your straps, string some wooden beads, and tie it all together through the top loops of your basket.
Supplies Needed

Hanging Straps
From the chevron hanger, chain until your strap measures your desired length (Small: ~104″, Medium/Large: ~120″). Fasten off, leaving a 6″ tail.
Assembly / Finishing
Now we attach the strap to the basket!
Your basket has four ch-3 loops around the top rim.
Place a wooden bead onto your long chain strap.
Take your strap tail and insert it into one of the ch-3 loops from the outside of the basket to the inside.
Pull the strap through until the distance between the basket top and the hanger is about 15″ (or your desired hang length).
Slide your wooden bead down snug against the top rim, and weave the strap back up through the bead (bottom to top).
Next, take the remaining strap and thread it through the hanger (skip the ch-2 space, thread it into the next stitch).
Repeat this weaving process: slide a bead onto the strap, thread the strap down into the next ch-3 loop on the basket, slide the bead flush, thread the strap back up through the bead, and back up to the hanger.
Continue weaving up and down, around all four points of the basket, until the hanger is fully suspended by four beautiful beaded straps. Tie off securely and hide your ends inside the top stitches!
Styling Tips
These hangers look stunning grouped in pairs or triplets! Because the pattern relies on sturdy cotton, they can be hung indoors or in a covered patio. Make sure your pots have drainage, but take them down to water them to keep the beautiful cream cotton pristine!
