Easy Lasagna Recipe

There’s something magical about the aroma of simmering meat sauce that turns my kitchen at spiilled into a haven. This Easy Lasagna Recipe captures the simplicity of fresh ingredients treated with care, creating layers of flavor that bring comfort and warmth to your home. The blend of ground beef and Italian sausage melds perfectly with garlic and herbs, inviting everyone to gather and enjoy.

The secret lies in allowing the onions to soften first, enhancing their natural sweetness, which beautifully offsets the acidity of the marinara sauce. This technique ensures a rich, well-rounded dish that’s both satisfying and unforgettable.

Ingredients in Easy Lasagna Recipe

  • Ricotta Cheese: Creamy and mild, ricotta helps create a lusciously smooth texture in the cheese layer, making every bite rich.
  • Egg: This unassuming hero lends stability to the ricotta mixture, ensuring the layers hold together beautifully.
  • Mozzarella Cheese: Essential for that gooey, melted cheese pull, mozzarella’s subtle flavor complements the boldness of the meat sauce.
  • Parmesan Cheese: Freshly grated, it provides a nutty, salty kick that enhances the cheese mixture with depth.
  • Italian Seasoning: This blend infuses aromatic herbs into the cheese spread, bringing the essence of Italy right to your table.
  • Salt and Pepper: Simple yet crucial, these add the final seasoning touch to the cheese layer, enhancing its flavor.
  • Olive Oil: A staple in Italian cooking, olive oil begins the sauce creation, sautéing onions to a tender state.
  • Yellow Onion: When finely diced and softened, onions add a subtle sweetness that balances the sauce’s acidity.
  • Ground Beef and Italian Sausage: A dynamic duo, these proteins bring a hearty, savory depth fundamental to a classic lasagna.
  • Garlic: Freshly minced, garlic entwines with the meats, releasing an aromatic allure that’s hard to resist.
  • Chicken Broth: Deglazes the pan, pulling every bit of flavor into the sauce and adding a hint of richness.
  • Marinara Sauce: The backbone of the meat sauce, it introduces tomato flavors, marrying the whole dish together.
  • Tomato Paste: Intensifies the marinara’s natural sweetness and acidity, creating a concentrated, balanced sauce.
  • Hot Sauce and Worcestershire Sauce: These two deliver a gentle kick and a savory depth that boost the meat sauce’s flavors.
  • Lasagna Noodles: Acting as the foundation, they hold the layers, ensuring each forkful is structurally sound.
  • Additional Mozzarella Cheese: Topping the final layer, it crowns the dish with a golden, bubbly finish.
  • Key Technique: Softened Onions: Allowing the onions to release their natural sugars balances the marinara, enriching the sauce with subtle sweetness.
  • Fresh Parsley: A sprinkle of vibrant parsley adds a touch of freshness to the finished dish.

Crafting Your Easy Lasagna Masterpiece

In just about 100 minutes, you’ll have a heartwarming, fragrant dish that brings everyone to the table. Let’s transform those simple ingredients into layers of Italian delight.

  1. Create Cheese Spread: Combine ricotta, one egg, two cups of mozzarella, Parmesan, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper in a medium bowl. Stir until smooth and creamy. Set aside for that rich, cheesy finish.
  2. Sauté Onions: Heat olive oil over medium heat. Add finely diced onions, letting them soften for 10 minutes. Watch as they turn translucent and aromatic. This sweetness will blend perfectly with the tangy tomatoes.
  3. Brown the Meat: Add ground beef and sausage to the onions. Increase heat to medium-high and break down the meat with a spatula. Cook for 8-10 minutes until browned and crumbled. Add minced garlic in the last minute, infusing the kitchen with a lovely, savory aroma. Drain excess grease.
  4. Simmer the Sauce: Pour in chicken broth, scraping the pot’s bottom to unlock those caramelized flavors. Add marinara, tomato paste, hot sauce, and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a boil, then simmer, partially covered, while pasta cooks. The sauce should look thick and glossy.
  5. Cook the Noodles: Boil a large pot of salted water. Add lasagna noodles, stirring gently with a wooden spoon. Cook until al dente, following the package. Drain and rinse under cold water, feeling them cool and avoid sticking.
  6. Assemble the Lasagna: Preheat oven to 375°F. In a 9×13 dish, spread 1 heaping cup meat sauce. Layer 4 noodles, overlapping if needed. Add 1/3 cheese spread and 1 ½ cups meat sauce. Repeat layers twice, finishing with remaining cheese spread and sauce.
  7. Top and Bake: Cover with 2 ½ cups mozzarella. Spray foil with nonstick spray. Place foil, spray-side down, over the dish. Bake for 35 minutes, then uncover and bake 10 more minutes. The cheese should be bubbly and golden.
  8. Rest and Serve: Remove from the oven, garnish with fresh parsley. Let it sit for 15 minutes—this allows the layers to set. Pair with garlic bread and enjoy every bite.

Twist on Tradition: Lasagna Variations

There’s always room for creativity, even with a classic like lasagna. Let’s explore some fun twists you can try next time you’re craving this comforting dish.

  • Plan Ahead: Assemble your lasagna and skip the baking, refrigerating for up to two days or freezing for up to three months. Simply bake it when you’re ready for a stress-free dinner.
  • No-Boil Shortcut: Swap in no-boil or fresh lasagna noodles to save time on boiling. They absorb the flavorful sauce, making the dish even more delightful.
  • Sauce Savvy: For a taste upgrade, try using Rao’s or Carbone marinara sauce. Their rich flavors enhance every layer and add a gourmet touch.
  • Cheese Upgrade: Ditch packaged cheese and opt for block cheese instead. Grate it yourself for superior meltiness and flavor in each cheesy bite.

Experiment with these variations, and you’ll discover new depths of flavor and convenience. Each twist is a small culinary adventure, perfect for tailoring the lasagna to your taste and needs. Enjoy the journey!

Keeping the Magic Alive

When it comes to storing your lasagna, think of it as preserving memories in a slice. To keep it fresh, place any leftovers in an airtight container and store them in the fridge for up to four days. If you’re planning to freeze it, make sure the lasagna has cooled completely before wrapping it tightly in foil or placing it in a freezer-safe container. It’ll keep its essence for up to three months this way.

Reheating is easy. For the best texture, pop it in the oven at 350°F. Cover it with foil to prevent the cheese from drying out, and let it warm through for about 20 minutes. If you’re in a hurry, a microwave will do the trick in smaller portions; just cover it with a damp paper towel to keep the moisture locked in. That first bite all over again is a moment worth savoring.

Bringing It All Together: Perfect Pairings for Easy Lasagna

There’s true kitchen magic in a bubbling lasagna, promising comfort even before the first bite. Pairing it with the right sides can turn a simple dinner into a hearty feast.

  • Garlic Bread with Cheese: The cheesy, garlicky goodness enhances the rich, savory notes of the lasagna, while its crisp exterior offers a delightful crunch.
  • Fresh Green Salad: A vibrant salad tossed with a light vinaigrette adds a refreshing, tangy contrast to the creamy, layered lasagna.
  • Roasted Brussels Sprouts: Their earthy flavor and caramelized edges complement the meat sauce, providing satisfying texture.

Garnishes to improve

  • Fresh Parsley: A sprinkle of parsley brings a burst of color and a hint of freshness that balances the heartiness of the dish.
  • Grated Parmesan: Adding a dusting of finely grated Parmesan before serving enhances the cheesy depth, making each bite feel special.
  • Red Pepper Flakes: If you’re in the mood for a bit of heat, a pinch of red pepper flakes can invigorate the classic flavors.

As you gather with family and friends, savor each layer, each flavor. What will you pair with your lasagna to make it unforgettable?

Ingredients

Cheese Spread
  • ▢ 15 oz. ricotta cheese, 2 cups
  • ▢ 1 large egg
  • ▢ 2 cups mozzarella cheese
  • ▢ ¾ cup Parmesan cheese, freshly grated
  • ▢ 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
  • ▢ ½ teaspoon salt
  • ▢ ¼ teaspoon pepper
Meat Sauce
  • ▢ 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • ▢ 1 yellow onion, finely diced
  • ▢ ¾ lb. ground beef
  • ▢ ¾ lb. ground Italian sausage
  • ▢ 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • ▢ ½ cup chicken broth
  • ▢ 40 oz. marinara sauce, see notes
  • ▢ 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • ▢ 1 teaspoon hot sauce
  • ▢ 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
Lasagna Noodles/ Cheese Topping
  • ▢ 12 lasagna noodles, plus extra in case of breakage
  • ▢ 2.5 cups mozzarella cheese

Method

  1. Combine the cheese spread ingredients in a medium bowl and set aside. Measure out remaining ingredients.
  2. Heat olive oil over medium heat and add the diced onions. Let them soften for 10 minutes. (This allows them to release a little sugar which is a nice offset to the acidity of the tomatoes.)
  3. Add the ground beef and sausage and increase heat to medium-high. Use a spatula to break up the meat so that it’s very fine and crumbled. Cook for 8-10 minutes, or until cooked through. Add garlic during the last minute. Drain excess grease.
  4. Add the chicken broth and use a silicone spatula to “clean” the bottom and sides of the pot. Add the marinara sauce, tomato paste, hot sauce, and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer. Cover partially and let the sauce simmer gently while you boil the pasta noodles.
  5. Preheat oven to 375°.
  6. Begin boiling a large pot of salted pasta water for the lasagna noodles. Once a rapid boil is reached, cook the noodles to al dente according to package instructions. (Set a timer to ensure you don’t overcook them.) Gently stir with a wooden spoon throughout cooking to prevent the noodles from sticking. Drain and rinse with cold water until noodles are completely cool.
  7. Lay the cooled noodles flat on wax or parchment paper while you begin assembling the lasagna.
  8. Spread 1 heaping cup of meat sauce on the bottom of a 9 x 13-inch casserole dish. Next, add 4 lasagna noodles, overlapping them if needed.
  9. Spread 1/3 of the cheese spread mixture over the noodles, followed by about 1 ½ cups of meat sauce.
  10. Top with 4 more lasagna noodles, 1/3 of the cheese spread, 1 ½ cups meat sauce.
  11. Finish with 4 more lasagna noodles, the rest of the cheese spread, and the rest of the meat sauce.
  12. Top with 2 ½ cups of mozzarella cheese.
  13. Spray foil with nonstick cooking spray and place it spray-side-down on top of the baking dish to prevent the cheese from sticking to it.
  14. Bake for 35 minutes. Remove cover and bake for 10 more minutes.
  15. Remove and garnish with fresh parsley. Let it sit for 15 minutes prior to serving to allow the layers to set. Serve with garlic bread with cheese.

Notes
