Ingredients that Make Caramel Self Saucing Baked Apples amazing

  • Apples: Juicy and sweet Modi red apples hold their shape beautifully while baking, becoming tender without turning to mush.
  • Water: Essential for creating the syrupy base around the apples, melding beautifully into our caramel sauce.
  • Cornflour: This unassuming power player, when mixed with water, thickens the caramel sauce until it clings lovingly to the apples.
  • Walnuts or Pecans: Chopped nuts add a delightful crunch, pairing seamlessly with the sweet, spiced filling.
  • Maple Syrup: A hint of natural sweetness with subtle, woodsy undertones that enhance the flavor.
  • Cinnamon: This aromatic spice brings warmth and depth—a must-have in any comforting apple dessert.
  • Ground Cloves: Just a pinch adds a slightly sweet, slightly spicy note, complementing the cinnamon beautifully.
  • Brown Sugar: Packed brown sugar lends a caramel-like richness to the filling, deepening the flavor.
  • Unsalted Butter: Melts into the filling, adding luxury and depth.
  • Salt: A small pinch to balance the sweetness and enhance the flavors.
  • Key Technique: Cornflour Mixture: Creates a thickening agent that transforms our syrupy base into a luscious caramel sauce during baking.
  • Garnish/Toppings: Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an indulgent finish.

How to Make Caramel Self Saucing Baked Apples

In just 55 minutes, transform a handful of ingredients into a dessert whispering comfort with every spoonful. Let’s dive into the sweet alchemy of creating these Caramel Self Saucing Baked Apples!

  1. Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 180C/350F. As the warmth begins to envelop your kitchen, let it signal the start of this flavorful journey.
  2. Prepare the Filling: In a mixing bowl, combine the nuts, maple syrup, cinnamon, ground cloves, brown sugar, melted butter, and a pinch of salt. Stir until it’s a fragrant blend. If it’s warm, pop this mixture into the fridge to firm it up to a scoopable texture.
  3. Core the Apples: Cut each apple in half through the core. Using an ice cream scoop or small knife, remove the core. Aim for a neat hollow, feeling the crispness of the apples beneath your fingertips.
  4. Arrange in Dish: Place the apple halves snugly in a baking dish. The apples should be cozy, cradling the incredible filling you’re about to add.
  5. Add the Filling: Generously pile the nutty mixture onto each apple half. Use an ice cream scoop for uniform mounds, and inhale the sweet, spicy aroma.
  6. Mix the Sauce: In a small bowl, dissolve the cornflour in a splash of water until smooth. Add the remaining water, then pour this around the apples in the dish.
  7. Bake with Care: Cover the dish with foil and bake for 20 minutes. Listen as the apples begin to tenderize, then remove the foil. Continue baking for another 20 minutes, until the tops are deep golden and the kitchen is filled with a warm, caramel fragrance.
  8. Serve with Warmth: Spoon the caramel sauce over each apple half, top with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, and enjoy the contrast of warm apples and cool ice cream.

Explore Delightful Twists

At spiilled, we’re all about adding creativity to make every dish feel like your own masterpiece. Here are some delightful variations to inspire your spin on these Caramel Self Saucing Baked Apples:

  • Tangy Temptation: Swap out the Modi red apples for Granny Smiths to introduce a delightful tanginess.
  • Nutty Crunch: Replace the walnuts or pecans with oats for a chewier, rustic texture, perfect for cozy evenings.
  • Creamy Dream: Serve your baked apples with ice cream. The creamy, cold contrast against the warm, caramel-laden apples is pure magic. Vanilla works wonders, but feel free to use your favorite flavor.
  • Cinnamony Extra: A splash of vanilla extract added to the filling offers aromatic depth, enhancing the cinnamon and cloves beautifully.

These small changes can take your baked apples to divine, making them adaptable for any palate or occasion. Enjoy experimenting!

Saving the Sweetness: Storing Your Baked Apples

Let’s talk about keeping these treats around a little longer. If there are any leftover baked apples (a rarity in my house!), store them in an airtight container in the fridge. They’ll last for about 3 to 4 days. Let them cool completely before sealing to prevent unwanted condensation from ruining the caramel sauce. Freezing isn’t recommended as the texture might not hold up well.

When you’re ready to enjoy that cozy goodness again, reheat these apples using your oven. Preheat to 160°C/320°F, place the apples in a baking dish, and cover loosely with foil. This method will gently warm them without drying out the caramel sauce. They’ll be just as dreamy as the first time around!

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 180C/350F.
  2. Mix Filling ingredients together then set aside while you prep the apples – it will firm up and become scoopable (pop in fridge if its super hot where you are).
  3. Cut the apples in half through the core then use an ice cream scooper, spoon or small knife to scoop out the core (see video).
  4. Place apples in a baking dish so they are reasonably snug – you don’t want heaps of space around them. Pile Filling on the apples – I use an ice cream scoop.

  6. Cover with foil, bake 20 minutes. Remove foil, then bake a further 20 minutes until the crumb is deep golden and the apples are tender (but not sloppy soft) and there’s a syrupy caramel in the pan (it thickens a bit more when serving).

Notes

The use of cornflour mixed with water is crucial in creating the syrupy caramel sauce that forms around the baked apples. This technique allows for the sauce to thicken beautifully, enhancing the overall texture and ensuring that each bite is enveloped in rich flavor.
