Apple Roses Recipe
There is a quiet magic in the kitchen at spiilled when the “Apple Roses Recipe” is in progress. The gentle aroma of cinnamon fills the air as I roll out the puff pastry, turning humble ingredients into a visual feast. Inspired by nature’s artistry, these roses make an ordinary day delightful.
Softening apple slices in the microwave makes rolling simpler, melding flavors during baking. This technique ensures the apples release their juices, creating a moist and flavorful filling.
Ingredients in Apple Roses Recipe
- Apples: Choose any variety, but red-skinned apples bring a delightful pop of color. They become tender and sweet when baked, providing the perfect base for our roses.
- Lemon Juice: A splash of tartness to keep the apples from browning and add a zesty brightness that complements their natural sweetness.
- Ground Cinnamon: This warm spice infuses the roses with a cozy, aromatic flavor that harmonizes beautifully with the apples and sugar.
- Light Brown Sugar: It adds a gentle sweetness and a rich, molasses depth that enhances the natural sugars in the apples.
- Puff Pastry: The buttery layers of puff pastry create a light, flaky crust, offering a crisp counterpoint to the tender apple filling.
- Jam: I love apricot for its fruity sweetness, but any favorite jam will work, acting as a sweet glue to hold everything together in the most incredible way.
- Key Technique: Microwaving Apples: This step softens the apple slices just enough to make them pliable, ensuring they roll easily and meld into the pastry.
- Glossy Finish: Once baked, brush the roses with a little more jam for an extra touch of shine—it’s the culinary equivalent of adding a bow on top!

Creating these apple roses is like crafting a small piece of edible art, and each ingredient plays a role in making them as delightful to eat as they are to admire. Happy baking!
How to Create Captivating Apple Roses
With a total cooking time of under an hour, these captivating apple roses will transform your kitchen into an aromatic haven. Let’s embark on this journey together, honoring the simplicity and beauty of our ingredients.
- Prepare Lemon Water: Mix lemon juice with a cup of cold water in a medium bowl. This will keep your apple slices from browning, preserving their vibrant hue as you work your magic.
- Mix Sugar & Cinnamon: In a small bowl, blend the brown sugar and cinnamon. The sweet-spicy aroma is a promise of what’s to come.
- Core & Slice Apples: Core the apples, then slice them in half lengthwise. With the flat side down, slice them thinly from bottom to top—thin enough that they’re almost translucent. Let the crisp scent of fresh apples fill the air as they fall effortlessly from your knife or mandolin.
- Soak Apple Slices: Submerge the slices in the lemon water, ensuring they’re coated, then set them aside. The citrusy water will keep them fresh and ready.

- Roll Out Pastry: Unwrap the puff pastry sheets onto a lightly floured surface, rolling them to ⅛-inch thick rectangles. The dough should feel cool and smooth beneath your rolling pin.

- Cut Pastry Strips: Cut each sheet into 6 strips. Give each a little room on your workspace, anticipating the beauty they’ll soon become.

- Brush With Jam: Loosen two tablespoons of jam with hot water. Brush each pastry strip, the glossy sweetness a prelude to the rose’s petals.
- Add Spice: Generously sprinkle the cinnamon brown sugar over each jam-covered strip. Envision that warm flavor weaving its way into every bite.

- Microwave Apples: Microwave the apples in the lemon water for 2 minutes. Softened yet vibrant, they’ll be pliant, releasing a waft of sweet-tart scent as you drain them.
- Assemble Roses: Lay apple slices along the top edge of each pastry strip, overlapping slightly. Fold the bottom of the strip, then roll it into a rose, feeling the pliable pastry encase the apple slices.

- Chill Roses: Nestle each rose into the muffin pan. Chill while you preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Anticipate the transformation that heat will soon bring.

- Bake & Finish: Bake for 40-45 minutes until golden. Peek occasionally—if edges look too charred, tent with foil. Let them cool on a rack, and for a shiny finish, brush with melted jam.

Creative Twists on Apple Roses
Sometimes, the best part of cooking is getting a bit adventurous. While our apple roses are gorgeous as-is, there are a few delightful tweaks you can try to make them uniquely yours.
- Radiant Red Apples: For a pop of vibrant color, switch things up by using Pink Lady or Jazz apples. Their hues are stunning and will shine even more after baking.
- Sweet Swap: If light brown sugar isn’t handy, feel free to use whatever sugar you have on hand. Granulated, caster, or even a touch of powdered sugar can add just the right sweetness.
- Jam or Glossy Glaze: While I love using jam on the pastry strips, for a more rustic finish, try an egg wash. It’ll add a beautiful sheen and structure to your roses.
- Microwave Magic: Instead of softening the apples on the stove, a quick zap in the microwave is all you need. It’s quicker and keeps this recipe simple.

Embrace these variations and discover new favorites. Whatever you choose, these apple roses will always be a feast for both the eyes and the palate.
Keeping the Magic Alive: Storing and Reheating Apple Roses
Once you’ve savored these delightful apple roses, you might find yourself with a few leftovers (though they tend to disappear quickly!). To keep them fresh, store the apple roses in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two days. It’s important to let them cool completely before sealing them up—this little trick keeps them from getting soggy. Unfortunately, these beauties don’t freeze well, as the texture may be compromised.
When you’re ready to enjoy them again, pop the apple roses into a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 10 minutes. This revitalizes the flaky pastry and warms the apples without drying them out. Avoid the microwave, which can make the pastry chewy. Just a little patience will bring these blossoms back to their full glory, ready to be relished once more.

Perfect Pairings for Apple Roses
As you unveil these enchanting apple roses from the oven, the sweet scent of cinnamon and apples dances through the air, setting the stage for a captivating dessert experience.
Sides to Enhance Your Roses:
- Vanilla Ice Cream: The creamy texture and coolness of vanilla ice cream contrast beautifully with the warmth and flakiness of the apple roses, creating a harmonious balance of temperature and flavor.
- Whipped Cream: Light and airy, whipped cream adds a cloud-like softness that highlights the spiced apple filling, making every bite feel rich.
- Spiced Tea: A warm cup of spiced tea with hints of cloves and star anise can echo the warmth of the cinnamon in the roses, enhancing the cozy vibe of your dessert experience.
Garnishes to improve Your Apple Roses:
- Dusting of Powdered Sugar: A delicate sprinkle of powdered sugar adds a touch of elegance and a hint of sweetness without overpowering the natural flavors of the apples.
- Toasted Almonds: For an added crunch and a subtle, nutty flavor, scatter some toasted almonds over your roses. They complement the soft pastry and tender apples with their hearty texture.
- Glossy Jam Glaze: Brushing a bit more melted apricot jam over the roses not only amplifies their shine but also enhances the fruity undertones, making them visually enticing.

In the end, serving these apple roses is about more than just dessert; it’s an invitation to share moments around the table. What will you pair with your apple roses for a truly memorable treat?

Apple Roses Recipe
Ingredients
Method
- Thaw the puff pastry fully in the refrigerator before beginning.
- Pour the lemon juice into a medium bowl with a cup of cold water. Combine the brown sugar with the cinnamon and mix together. Spray a muffin pan with non-stick spray.
- Core the apples and cut them in half lengthwise. Place the flat side down on the chopping board and from the bottom of the apple to the top, start slicing into very thin slices, as thin as you can get them. You can use a mandolin if you prefer.
- Place the apple slices into the bowl of lemon water and make sure they are coated to prevent browning. Set aside.
- Unpackage the puff pastry sheets and place them on a lightly floured work surface. Roll them out into rectangles roughly ⅛-inch (3mm) thick.
- Cut each puff pastry sheet into 6 even strips and space them apart slightly on your work surface.
- Mix 2 tablespoons of the jam with a splash of hot water to loosen it up, then use a pastry brush to cover each of the strips in a thin layer of jam.
- Sprinkle each strip generously with the cinnamon brown sugar.
- Microwave the bowl of apples for 2 minutes to soften them. Then drain the excess water. If they are too hot to touch, let them sit for a minute to cool off, but don't let them cool completely.
- Place apple slices along the top edge of one of the pastry strips so they are just slightly sticking out over the edge. Line them up so that the next apple starts halfway across the last apple, until you reach the end of the strip (see pictures in the post above). I recommend placing the apple slices and rolling the roses from start to finish for each strip, one at a time.
- Fold the bottom of the pastry strip up on itself, as if you are tucking the apples into bed.
- Brush the top of the strip with a little more jam to help it stick, and then carefully start rolling up the pastry from one end to the other until you have a perfect little rose shape.
- Place the puff pastry rose inside a muffin pan cavity. Repeat with all 12 strips.
- Once all 12 roses are formed, place them in the refrigerator to chill while you preheat the oven to 400°F / 200°C (180°C fan).
- Bake the roses on the middle rack for 40-45 minutes. If the apples start to brown, you can tent them with some kitchen foil, though I personally love the look of the slightly charred edges!
- Once done, the pastry should be golden brown. Remove them from the oven and run a sharp knife around the edge of the pan if needed. Transfer the roses to a cooling rack immediately to prevent them from sticking to the pan or going soggy.
- Optional: For a shiny finish, melt the remaining tablespoon of jam in the microwave and brush it onto the top of the apples as a glossy glaze.
