Chic Minimalist Crochet Handbag Pattern

0

This free crochet handbag pattern makes a structured, minimalist bag in worsted weight yarn, worked in single crochet for a dense fabric that holds its shape without lining. It is a good first bag project: no shaping beyond the base, and the strap is worked directly onto the body. Finished size, yarn and hook details are below.

If you’ve been looking for a stylish, modern, and deceptively simple accessory to add to your wardrobe, look no further! This crochet handbag is the perfect blend of fashion and function. Whether you want a chic clutch for a night out or an easy-to-carry shoulder bag for daily errands, this versatile design has got you covered.

Working primarily in the back loop, this pattern creates a stunning ribbed texture that looks way more complicated than it actually is. Plus, it’s sturdy enough to hold your essentials without losing its shape. The clean, minimalist rectangular design makes it a timeless piece you’ll reach for again and again.

Grab your favorite cord yarn and let’s get hooking! This project is great for those who want quick results with a high-end look.

Finished Size

When completed, this bag measures approximately 10.5 inches (26.7 cm) wide by 6.13 inches (15.5 cm) tall. It’s the perfect sweet spot—large enough for your phone, keys, and a small wallet, but compact enough not to be cumbersome.

Gauge

To ensure your bag turns out the right size and has the necessary stiffness, check your gauge: 16 stitches by 15 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) in single crochet worked in the back loop.

Construction Overview

This bag is constructed in two main parts: the body and the strap. The body is worked in continuous rounds (a spiral), starting from a foundation chain that forms the base, working our way up to the top opening. We’ll then create a separate I-cord strap which will be attached to the bag using removable metal ring hooks, allowing you to easily swap between a shoulder bag and a clutch!

Supplies You’ll Need

  • Yarn: Approximately 140 yards of 3mm Polyester cord (shown in camel color). The cord gives the bag its excellent structure and durability.

  • Notions: Yarn needle for weaving in ends, scissors, and a stitch marker to keep track of your continuous rounds.
  • Hardware: 1 pair of metal ring hooks (for attaching the strap).

Stitches & Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch: Chain
  • st(s): Stitch(es)
  • sc: Single crochet
  • bl: Back loop only
  • YO: Yarn over
  • REP: Repeat

Special Stitches: The I-Cord

For the strap, we will be making a crochet I-cord. If you haven’t made one before, don’t worry! It’s simply a method of working a small tube for a sturdy, rounded strap.

Setup: Chain 3. Insert your hook into the second chain from the hook, yarn over, and pull up a loop. Insert your hook into the next chain, yarn over, and pull up a loop. You now have 3 loops on your hook.

The I-cord row: Carefully remove the first two loops from your hook (pinch them so they don’t unravel!). With the one remaining loop on your hook, yarn over and pull up a loop. Insert your hook into the first dropped loop, yarn over and pull up a loop. Insert your hook into the second dropped loop, yarn over and pull up a loop. You have 3 loops on your hook again! Repeat this process to grow your cord.

Pattern Instructions

The Bag Body

Note: We are working in a continuous spiral. Do not join with a slip stitch at the end of the round. Use a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round to keep your place.

Round 1: Ch 41. Place 1 sc into the second ch from the hook, and 1 sc into each ch across. Now, working along the opposite side of the foundation chain, place 1 sc into each ch across. (80 sc)

Round 2: 2 sc into the bl of the first st, 1 sc into the bl of the next 38 sts, 2 sc into the bl of the next st, 2 sc into the bl of the next st. Place 1 sc into the bl of each st until you have 1 st left, then place 2 sc into the bl of the last st. (84 sts)

Rounds 3 – 23: 1 sc into the bl of each st around. (84 sts)

At the end of Round 23, fasten off, cut your yarn, and weave in all ends securely.

The Strap

If you prefer a clutch, you can skip this step! Otherwise, grab your yarn for the strap.

Row 1: Ch 3. Insert hook into the second ch from the hook, YO and pull up a loop. Insert hook into the next ch, YO and pull up a loop. (3 loops on hook).

Row 2: Remove two loops from the hook (hold them tight!). With the remaining loop on the hook, YO and pull up a loop. Insert hook into the first dropped loop, YO and pull up a loop. Insert hook into the second dropped loop, YO and pull up a loop. (3 loops on hook).

Repeat Row 2 until your strap reaches approximately 24 inches long, or your desired length.

To Finish the Strap: With 3 loops on your hook, YO and pull through all 3 loops. Ch 1 to secure. Fasten off, leaving a tail, and weave in the ends.

Assembly & Finishing

The beauty of this bag is how simple the assembly is! Take your metal ring hooks and slide them onto the ends of your I-cord strap. Then, simply clip the ring hooks onto the top sides of your finished bag body.

Styling Tips

This bag is incredibly versatile. Wear it cross-body over a flowy summer dress, or remove the strap and carry it as a clutch for an evening out. The camel color pairs beautifully with neutral tones, denim, and even bright pops of color. You can also customize it by adding a lining or a magnetic snap closure if you prefer!

Quick Reference Notes

  • Remember to always work in the back loops only from Round 2 onwards to get that gorgeous ribbed texture.
  • Keep an eye on your stitch marker! It’s very easy to lose your place in continuous rounds.
  • If sewing isn’t your favorite, the hardware ring hooks are a lifesaver for attaching the strap without needles.
