Construction Overview
This crochet bag is worked seamlessly in continuous rounds from the bottom up. You will first crochet a large tube starting with the solid base, moving onto the mesh section, and finishing with the solid top edge. Once the tube is complete, the bottom edge is seamed flat and the corners are sewn to create a boxed, flat-bottomed base. Finally, thick crocheted rope handles are threaded through designated holes at the top rim and secured with knots.

Assembly & Finishing
Seaming the Bottom of the Bag
- Turn the bag inside out and lay it flat. Line up the handle holes on the front of the bag with the handle holes on the back of the bag. You should have exactly 39 stitches between the holes across the top.
- Using a yarn needle and a long length of White yarn (about 3 times the width of the bag), whipstitch the bottom opening closed. Make sure to catch every stitch. Weave in the ends securely.
- To box the corners, keep the bag inside out. Flatten one corner of the bottom seam so it forms the tip of a triangle (the seam should be centered vertically down the middle of the triangle).
- Using a measuring tape, measure 3.5″ down from the tip of the triangle. Mark across this line with stitch markers. The line across the triangle should measure about 6.5″ wide.
- With your yarn needle and an 18″ piece of yarn, sew a straight seam across your marked line, working through both layers of the bag. Repeat this process for the opposite corner.
- Turn the bag right side out. You now have a flat, boxed base!
Handles
You can create two thick crochet rope handles measuring approximately 30 inches each. Alternatively, you can use pre-made thick cotton rope cut to size.
Attaching the Handles
- With the right side of the bag facing you, insert one end of a handle from the back to the front through one of the handle holes. Insert the other end of the same handle from the back to the front through the adjacent hole on the same side.
- Tie a tight, secure knot at each end of the handle on the front side of the bag.
- For extra security, use a yarn needle and an 8″ piece of yarn to subtly sew the handle to the top edge of the bag right where it exits the hole.
- Repeat the process to attach the second handle on the opposite side of the bag.
Styling Tips
This beautiful tote pairs flawlessly with flowy linen pants, oversized sunglasses, and a classic straw hat. Because it uses 100% mercerized cotton, it’s durable enough to handle sandy environments and will hold its shape beautifully. Keep a colorful Turkish towel draped over the edge for a pop of vibrant summer color!
Quick Reference Notes
- Always keep tension even, especially when working the continuous spiral sections, to ensure the bag stands up straight.
- Cotton yarn is highly recommended over acrylic for bags because it stretches less and doesn’t pill as easily.
