Baked Ham with the Best Glaze

There’s something about the aroma of a glazed ham wafting through the kitchen that transforms the space into a festive gathering place. As the sun sets, this Baked Ham with the Best Glaze becomes the centerpiece, inviting everyone to share stories and laughter. The sweet and tangy glaze fills the air, making every slice an invitation to celebrate togetherness.

By using a spiral cut ham, the glaze seeps into every slice, creating a harmonious blend of flavors. This technique ensures even cooking and maximizes the surface area for a beautifully caramelized finish.

Ingredients That Make the Best Baked Ham

  • Bone-in Spiral Cut Ham: The star of the show, allowing the glaze to seep into every slice for consistent flavor throughout.
  • Light Brown Sugar: Adds sweetness and helps create a caramelized, sticky texture on the exterior of the ham.
  • Freshly Squeezed Orange Juice: Provides a burst of citrus that balances the sweetness and enhances the flavor profile.
  • Honey: Enhances the glaze’s stickiness and adds a floral note that pairs well with the other ingredients.
  • Dijon Mustard: Lends a subtle tanginess, adding depth and complexity.
  • Unsalted Butter: Adds richness, helping the glaze achieve a smooth, velvety texture.
  • Ground Allspice: Introduces a hint of warmth and spice, enhancing the savory undertones.
  • Ground Cloves: Offers a fragrant touch that complements the ham’s flavors.
  • Key Technique: Spiral Cut: Ensures the glaze permeates every slice, resulting in an even, caramelized exterior.
  • Garnish: Finish with fresh herbs or citrus slices for an eye-catching presentation.

Crafting Your Show-Stopping Baked Ham

With a total cook time of about 215 minutes, this baked ham will fill your home with inviting aromas. Let’s dive into the steps to create this centerpiece dish.

  1. Prepare the Ham: Remove the ham from the refrigerator one hour before cooking, allowing it to come to room temperature for even cooking.
  2. Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 325°F and position the rack in the lower third.
  3. Position the Ham: Place the ham, cut side down, in a roasting pan. Cover tightly with foil to lock in moisture.
  1. Bake Under Wraps: Bake at 325°F for about 10-11 minutes per pound. Set a timer for 20 minutes before the bake ends so you can prepare for glazing.
  2. Create the Glaze: In a saucepan, combine brown sugar, orange juice, honey, Dijon mustard, butter, allspice, and cloves. Heat on medium and simmer for 5-7 minutes, whisking often until the glaze thickens.
  1. Glaze and Caramelize: When the ham’s internal temperature nears 115-120°F, increase oven heat to 400°F. Uncover, brush half of the glaze across the ham, and return to the oven for 15 minutes.

  1. Final Glaze: Brush on the remaining glaze and bake for an additional 5 minutes, until the ham reaches 140°F.
  2. Rest and Serve: Allow the ham to rest for 15 minutes before slicing and serving.

Your crafted baked ham is an ode to festive gatherings. Embrace the moment and share the joy with those around you.

Bringing Your Own Touch to the Best Glazed Ham

When it comes to Baked Ham with the Best Glaze, there’s room to make it your own while keeping the integrity of that sweet, sticky coating. Let’s explore some delightful ways to tweak this standout dish.

  • Classic Over Packet: Skip the store-bought glaze packet that might accompany your ham. Crafting your own with brown sugar, honey, and spices makes each bite memorable.
  • Zesty Orange Twist: Add zest of a small orange to your glaze for an extra pop of brightness, enhancing the orange juice’s natural tang.
  • Subtle Mustard Flavor: If you’re not a fan of mustard, you can dial it down. Its role is more of a harmony maker, balancing sweetness with gentle tang.

These variations allow you to bring a personal flair while maintaining the essence of what makes this ham amazing. Whether you’re making memories with family or wowing guests, these tweaks ensure your dish stands out every time

Savoring Tomorrow’s Delights

Once the feast is over, it’s time to think about leftovers. Store any extra ham in an airtight container in the fridge, where it’ll stay tasty for up to a week. Just make sure to let the ham cool completely before sealing it. If you’d like to freeze some for later, it’ll keep its charm for up to two months.

To reheat, preserve that beautiful glaze and moist texture by warming slices in the oven. Wrap them tightly in foil and heat at 300°F for about 10-15 minutes.

Creating the Perfect Plate

Picture this: you’re gathered around the table with loved ones, admiring the golden crust of the ham while planning the perfect pairings.

  • Creamy Mashed Potatoes: Their subtlety lets the ham shine while adding a luxurious element to every bite.
  • Roasted Brussels Sprouts: They offer an earthiness that balances the sweetness of the ham.
  • Glazed Carrots: They provide a sweet and savory harmony that dances well with the main event.

Garnishes to Improve Your Presentation

  • Fresh Parsley: Sprinkling bright green parsley over the ham draws the eye and adds contrast.
  • Orange Zest: A touch from the orange used in your glaze brightens the dish.
  • Crushed Pecans: Introduce a buttery crunch, adding texture.

So, what are your go-to sides for a family feast? I’d love to hear how you make this Baked Ham with the Best Glaze part of your celebrations. Share those kitchen stories and craft memories together, one dish at a time.

Ingredients

Ingredients
  • ▢ 8-12 pound bone-in spiral cut ham, fully cooked*
  • ▢ ½ cup light brown sugar
  • ▢ ½ cup freshly squeezed orange juice
  • ▢ ¼ cup honey
  • ▢ 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • ▢ 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • ▢ ¼ teaspoon ground allspice
  • ▢ ¼ teaspoon ground cloves

Method

  1. Remove the ham from the refrigerator 1 hour before cooking to let it come to room temperature. This helps it to cook evenly.
  2. Preheat oven to 325°F with a rack in the lower third of the oven (remove any other racks that would be in the way of the ham).
  3. Remove the ham from the packaging. If there is a glaze packet or plastic disk covering the bone, remove and discard them. Place ham in a roasting pan or large, deep baking dish, cut side down. Cover the pan/ham tightly with foil. (You will probably need to use a few pieces of foil to fully cover the ham.)
  4. You will now bake the ham most of the way at 325°F, covered with foil. When the ham has only 20 minutes of cook time left, you will uncover it, and start brushing on the glaze (see the steps below). The total bake time for the ham is about 10-11 minutes per pound. (A 10 pound ham will take about 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours total.) Set a timer for 20 minutes before the ham should be fully cooked to start checking on it.
  5. While the ham is in the oven, make the glaze: In a medium saucepan, combine the brown sugar, orange juice, honey, Dijon mustard, butter, allspice and ground cloves. Heat over medium heat, whisking often, until glaze starts to boil. Then reduce heat to medium-low and continue cooking at a low boil, whisking often, until the glaze thickens, 5-7 minutes. Remove from the heat.
  6. When the ham has about 20 minutes of cook time left and has reached an internal temperature of 115-120°F, take it out of the oven and increase the oven temperature to 400°F. Uncover the ham and brush on half of the glaze, trying to get some in between the slices. Return the ham to the oven and bake, uncovered, for 15 minutes. Then brush on the remaining glaze, and bake for 5 more minutes, or until ham reaches 140°F when measured with an instant read thermometer.
  7. Remove ham from the oven and let it rest for 15 minutes. Then slice and serve.
